Clinical Approaches to Chronic Disease: Highlights from the Functional Medicine Research CenterSM
Joseph Lamb, MD · Aaron Hoo, ND · Jason Bachewich, ND

Translational research has led to scientific breakthroughs for some of today’s most serious health conditions. In this insightful seminar, a member of our research team will present representative case studies as well as the latest results from ongoing clinical research.

Key clinical takeaways:

  • First-hand knowledge of Metagenics' evolving work on osteoporosis, obesity, and
    metabolic syndrome
  • An overview of the clinical work at the Functional Medicine Research Center (FMRC) and primary research being conducted at the MetaProteomics® Nutrigenomics Research Center
Successful Management of the Intersection of Chronic Diseases
Robert Lerman, MD, PhD

The alarming rise of chronic conditions such as obesity, metabolic syndrome, diabetes, and autoimmune/inflammatory disorders has hastened the search for novel and natural approaches to their management and prevention. Over the past several years, the FMRC has developed a variety of innovative and clinically successful approaches including dietary interventions, medical foods, and nutraceuticals.

At this informative seminar, you’ll learn:

  • An overview of original cell signaling research conducted at the MetaProteomics Nutrigenomics Research Center
  • How these findings have helped to identify common factors in chronic disease
  • Practical dietary approaches and the use of medical foods and nutritional supplements for the management of chronic disease
Food, Phytochemicals, and Cell Signaling
Deanna Minich, PhD, CN

As the healthcare community grapples with finding the best dietary approaches for managing chronic disease, terms such as "low fat," "low carb," and "high protein" have become part of the national dietary vocabulary. However, this tendency to focus on a single macronutrient too often results in an unbalanced—and, ultimately, unhealthy—diet.

Clearly, simply focusing on macronutrient intake is not a sufficient answer to the complex
problem of chronic disease. As an alternative, a dietary intervention based on phytochemical content may be the next frontier of nutrition.

At this exciting seminar, you’ll learn:

  • Current dietary therapies available for chronic disease management
  • Recent developments in molecular biology and how they interface with nutritional therapy
  • The research, development, and clinical application for selective kinase response
    modulators (SKRMs)
The Good, the Bad, and the Inflammatory
Jacob Kornberg, MD · Aaron Hoo, ND · Jason Bachewich, ND

Inflammation is a protective mechanism to defend the body against most threats. However, unrestrained, it can incite changes that lead to many of the chronic diseases that plague our society, including arthritis, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and autoimmune dysfunction.

Using a Functional Medicine approach and the FirstLine Therapy® lifestyle modification program, healthcare providers have a golden window of opportunity to safely intervene and address inflammation early on.

Clinical takeaways include:

  • A functional medicine approach to addressing the root causes of altered immunity
    and inflammation
  • How to recognize patterns suggestive of early inflammatory and autoimmune
dysfunction; how and when to safely intervene
  • How to implement the FirstLine Therapy lifestyle modification program to address
external influences contributing to these conditions

About the FMRC:

The Functional Medicine Research CenterSM (FMRC), located in Gig Harbor, Washington, is the clinical research arm of Metagenics, Inc., a leading developer and manufacturer of medical foods and nutraceuticals sold to healthcare practitioners worldwide. FMRC researchers are focused on investigating and developing clinical approaches to common conditions using diet, nutritional supplementation, and other natural therapies, including FirstLine Therapy®—a comprehensive therapeutic lifestyle changes program. More than 2,000 patient visits are conducted annually as part of ongoing FMRC clinical studies and individual case management studies.

The 2008 FMRC workshops will be conducted by one of the following speakers:

Jason Bachewich, ND Jason Bachewich, ND, received his naturopathic medical degree from the Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine and is a Board Member of the Manitoba Naturopathic Association.
